Alan trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Work in theatre includes Stuff Happens, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Jumpers (also at the Piccadilly Theatre), The Devil's Disciple, The Birthday Party, Waiting For Godot at the Royal National Theatre, The Seagull at the Donmar for ETT, Tolstoy at the Aldwych, Exclusive at the Novello, Young Writer’s Festival at the Royal Court, the premiere production of Blood Brothers at the Lyric and A Midsummer Night's Dream at Regent's Park.

Regional theatre includes Charlie's Aunt at the Crucible, Sheffield; Peter Pan, Oh What A Lovely War!, Romeo And Juliet at the Connaught, Worthing; The Caretaker at the Palace, Westcliff; Kidnapped and The Imaginary Invalid at Manchester Library; and The Merry Wives Of Windsor and The Silver King at Chichester Festival Theatre.

TV includes Waking The Dead, Doctors, Footballers' Wives, The Ship, Holby City, Midsomer Murders, The Knock, London's Burning, The Bill, No Job For A Lady, Prime Suspect, Silent Witness, Henry VIII, Ripping Yarns- Across The Andes By Frog, The Professionals and The Sweeney. Film includes Another Life, Memento Mori, Who Dares Wins, Spirit and Rough Cut.
