PHILIP MADOC

Rev. Martin Gregory

Philip was born in South Wales and attended the Universities of Wales and Vienna, where he became an interpreter (Interpretation Diploma, University Of Vienna) and since entering the theatre has worked in Russian, French, German and Italian.

Stage roles of particular interest include Iago in OTHELLO, Anthony in ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA and Strindberg’s THE FATHER. He toured England and the Continent in DUET FOR ONE, played Domenico in FILUMENA, MACBETH for Theatre Wales and George in WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? at The Bristol Old Vic. He played Claudius and The Ghost in HAMLET, Father Mapple in MOBY DICK and FAUST at Theatr Clwyd. Stalin in THE TEDDY BEAR’S PICNIC at Chester, Joe Keller in ALL MY SONS and Henry Higgins in PYGMALION at The Malvern Festival. He starred in National Tours of a new play DEAD OF NIGHT and a new farce HOME IS WHERE YOUR CLOTHES ARE, co-starred in THE FORSYTHE SAGA and played Alun Weaver in the stage adaptation of the Kingsley Amis novel THE OLD DEVILS at Theatr Clwyd. Philip then joined The Royal Shakespeare Company for two productions directed by Trevor Nunn playing The Duke in MEASURE FOR MEASURE and starring in THE BLUE ANGEL which transferred to The West End. Afterwards, he completed a Number One tour starring as Bounderby in HARD TIMES. He also worked on the 50th Anniversary production of Terence Rattigan’s DEEP BLUE SEA at the Palace Theatre, Watford, Falstaff in Michael Bogdanov’s production of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR and SHYLOCK in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE both at the Ludlow Festival. More recently, he played the father in THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV and appeared in HAPPIEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE, both at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. He is soon to be seen in UNDER MILKWOOD at the Tricycle Theatre, London.

Philip’s television work is extensive and includes the title role in the BBC Wales’ LLOYD GEORGE, Magua in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, Dr Lewis in ANOTHER BOUQUET and special guest appearances on comedies such as PORRIDGE and DAD’S ARMY. He appeared in FORTUNES OF WAR, played Lancing in FIRST BORN and Sir George Fison in the award winning drama A VERY BRITISH COUP, all for the BBC. He played the Jordache’s Defence Counsel in BROOKSIDE for Channel 4. He also appeared in Fiction Factory’s THE COCKLE FARMER.

Philip starred in HTV/Channel 5’s highly successful detective series A MIND TO KILL.

His film work includes OPERATION CROSSBOW, OPERATION DAYBREAK, THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM, Trotsky in ZINA, MONTE CARLO, Stephen Dorff’s Grandfather in the US feature DEN OF LIONS and most recently MOSTLY GHOSTLY.

Philip’s audio tape work includes the Poetry and Prose of Dylan Thomas, A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS, DR ZHIVAGO, DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, and the CANTERBURY TALES.

Philip has numerous radio credits, but more recent credits include starring in BBC Radio’s THE CRUEL SEA with Donald Sinden and Helen Baxendale, THE RHYME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, Prospero in THE TEMPEST, UNDER MILKWOOD, ANCIENT SCORCERY, and SAMSON AGONISTES. He played the title role in KING LEAR for BBC Open University and narrated the series EGYPT.

Philip is a fellow of The Royal Welsh College Of Music & Drama and has an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University Of Glamorgan.
