James trained at Telford College in Edinburgh and Rose Bruford College in Kent, where he played Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Simon Chachava in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Sailor Sawney in Live Like Pigs, Banquo in Macbeth, and John Morrison in Men Should Weep.
Since graduating from Rose Bruford, he has worked in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Theatre Alba continuously since 2001, appearing as Menteith in The Wallace, Malcolm in Macbeth (again), The Earl of Bothwell in The Burning, Bottom in A Midsummer Nights Dream, and Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew (all outdoor productions).
He has also toured a production of Your Turn to Clean the Stair with Rapture Theatre, playing Bobby McNulty, and appeared as Traci in a Theatre Enigma production of Four Knights in Knaresborough at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.
T.V. credits include Taggart, and Suburban Home which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2005.
