James was born in Lanark in 1960 and lived in Hamilton until 1982, when he gave up a career as a Biomedical Scientist to study Drama at RSAMD. At RSAMD he gained a Diploma in Dramatic Art and also won the BBC’s Carlton Hobbs award.

On leaving RSAMD he started a six months contract on the BBC’s Radio Drama Company. He went on to work on Scottish Television’s Taggart from 1986 until 2000 as DCI Michael Jardine.

Between 1988 and 1992 played Hugh Hamilton on Radio 4’ s Citizens.

He has performed in over 500 radio dramas including The Citadel, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Elephant Dances, Espedair Street and The Stanley Baxter Playhouse for Radio 4. He has read over 14 Ian Rankin Inspector Rebus Novels for Orion and in 2003 was awarded a Spoken Word Award for “Strip Jack”.

He has most recently been playing Raymond in Radio Scotlands new sit com Free Falling.

Television work includes Taggart, The Bill and Doctors. Extensive experience as a presenter includes The Bafta Crafts Awards (ITV), The Scots Detective (Channel 4), James and John in the Afternoon (BBC Radio Scotland) and 2 years on Cover Stories (BBC Radio Scotland). He regularly presents Off The Ball for BBC Radio Scotland.

In the theatre James has appeared in The Patter at the Third Eye Centre, directed by Hamish Wilson (1986) and as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester directed by Michial Manutu (1996), Abanazer in Aladdin at His Majesty’s in Aberdeen directed by Karl Howman(2002), Serg in Art for The Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh directed by Kenny Ireland (2003), Captain Hook in Peter Pan at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen (2003), and Quartet by Donna Franceschild and Pro Active by Alma Cullen both at Oran Mor Glasgow.

Since 2002 James has helped on the auditioning panel for entry to the Acting course of RSAMD and in 2005 he was made a Fellow.

His hobbies include Bridge, singing in a band, film and music.
